Staff Software Engineer, Google Distributed Cloud, Object Storage

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8 years of experience programming in C++.
  • 5 years of experience testing, and launching software products.
  • 5 years of experience building and developing large-scale infrastructure, distributed systems or networks, or experience with compute technologies, storage, or hardware architecture.
  • 3 years of experience with software design and architecture.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role leading project teams and setting technical direction.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or container orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience managing storage systems.
  • Experience in Go programming.

In this role, you will join the Object Storage team within the storage everywhere division to help build the future of data as Google brings cloud capabilities anywhere in data center, at the edge and in the cloud through Google Distributed Cloud. You will be on a mission to deliver highly scalable, secure and performant S3 compatible storage solutions for all platforms, tacking critical issues in data plane and control plane management, maximizing scale, performance tuning, and integration with Google Distributed Cloud as the team builds storage solutions to allow strategy applications to seamlessly run across all of these environments.Google Cloud accelerates every organization’s ability to digitally transform its business and industry. The US base salary range for this full-time position is $197,000-$291,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Define the long-term goal and roadmap for Google Distributed Cloud, aligning technical strategy with broader organizational goals.
  • Own the architectural evolution of critical storage services, balancing immediate feature delivery with long-term scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Lead the ideation and implementation of features while influencing industry standards and best practices.
  • Ensure system health by enforcing rigorous coding standards, monitoring Service Level Objective, Service Level Agreement (SLOs/SLAs) and proactively solving large-scale performance bottlenecks.
  • Foster an engineering environment through direct mentorship of executive talent and modeling core organizational values.
