Outside Counsel Spend and Vendor Strategy Lead

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7 years of experience in legal pricing within an in-house legal department or law firm.
  • Experience with spreadsheets and data sets.
  • Experience with people management.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience in procurement/strategic sourcing.
  • Knowledge of BigQuery, Data Studio, or similar SQL querying and dashboard building tools.
  • Ability to work with third-party systems.
  • Excellent attention to detail, with the ability to contribute in a fast-paced, changing work environment.
  • Passion for legal service delivery models, law firm pricing structures, technology within the legal landscape, and the legal industry at large.

About the job

As the Outside Counsel (OC) Spend and Vendor Strategy Lead, you will play a critical role in optimizing our relationships with and spend on outside counsel, ensuring we receive maximum value and cost-effectiveness while maintaining high-quality legal support. You will collaborate closely with our in-house attorneys and OC to define matter scope, establish budgets, and negotiate rates and fee arrangements. You will interact with and influence stakeholders and business partners, including senior legal, regulatory affairs, and finance leaders, and prepare and present data regarding spending patterns and recommendations regarding OC usage.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $158,000-$235,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of professionals focused on OC spend management and vendor strategy.
  • Partner directly with internal attorneys and OC at the outset of significant matters to clearly define scope, assumptions, and key deliverables.
  • Review and assess matter-level budgets and alternative fee arrangements (AFAs) in collaboration with matter leads and OC.
  • Lead the strategy and execution of law firm rate negotiations.
  • Manage benchmark rates and fee structures against industry standards and available comparables.
