Technical Writer Manager

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10 years of experience creating content for technical audiences (e.g., developer documentation, Computer Science course material, or IT administration playbooks).
  • 5 years of leadership experience in technical writing, content strategy, or web development.
  • Experience documenting products, libraries, and samples written in one of the following: JavaScript, Kotlin, Java, Swift, Objective-C, Python, Go.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience working with and influencing senior-level executives.
  • Ability to grasp and apply the general concepts of a technical domain to analyzing problems, providing insights, communicating technical information, and acquiring knowledge across technical domains.
  • Ability to influence the direction or strategy of related content in adjacent domains and across the organization.
  • Excellent thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in identifying and addressing ambiguous or new problems spanning multiple systems/organizations.

Technical writers communicate complex information clearly, concisely and accurately, and without relying on jargon. As a technical writer, your role involves tasks such as writing conceptual overviews and procedures, reading and writing example code, or updating help center queries and FAQs. Technical writers play a big part at Google. They are a key link between engineers, marketing associates, developer advocates, as well as all the external users and developers, tying together many vital but disparate parts of the Google ecosystem.

Using your extensive technical and leadership experience, you manage a team of writers, setting direction, giving feedback, collaborating internally and lending specific content expertise.

In our quest to map the world over the past 20 years, we can now provide the highest quality, most reliable, and broadest coverage of geospatial data worldwide to power user experiences and improve business operations.

Our mission is to inspire, educate, and jumpstart Google Maps Platform developers, helping them succeed and grow by delivering the most trusted and easy-to-use developer experience.

Our team, Geo Developer Relations, is responsible for engaging, growing, and serving the needs of Google Maps Platform’s worldwide community of 1 Million developers. We do this by building and maintaining open source software, engaging in scalable outreach across multiple channels, and creating all of the technical documentation for the platform across APIs, SDKs, and vertical industry solutions.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $153,000-$227,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategy and direction for critical content sets based on domain expertise. Drive initiatives aligned with business and user needs. Influence organizational strategies for information architecture, format, voice, and style, tailored audiences.
  • Plan, research, and produce significant, or critical content sets. Develop solutions integral to product, program, and business success. Ensure high-quality, well-organized, findable, and maintainable content, influencing and directing organizational learning content strategy.
  • Serve as a trusted peer to other leaders, framing problems and solutions for executive leadership. Build and influence cross-organizational collaborations.
  • Lead website development and overall content strategy, and collaborate with stakeholders on AI training and evaluation strategies for content discoverability and high-quality AI responses.
  • Act as a thought leader, applying technical expertise and business judgment to set strategy and direction for critical artifacts, services, or processes.
