Platform Kernel Engineer, ChromeOS

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience with software development, coding in C, or 1 year of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Experience working on the Linux kernel.
  • Experience with debugging.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience developing low-level firmware, device drivers, and BSPs, including within open-source projects.
  • Experience with bringing up USB-C stacks, sensors, and other peripherals.
  • Experience with ARM architecture-related BSP and device driver development.
  • Experience with Linux development environments and Git/Gerrit.
  • Experience building consumer electronics and familiarity with manufacturing, supply chain, and customer support processes, and with Android stack and driver development.
  • Ability to interpret hardware schematics and troubleshoot hardware issues.

You will contribute to the development of low-level embedded firmware and software, including device drivers and kernel components, for new devices.

As a Platform Kernel Engineer, you will collaborate with a team of kernel, firmware, and hardware engineers to design, implement, and improve features, processes, and overall quality. You will have the opportunity to develop firmware, device drivers, and kernel modules for ChromeOS/Andriod devices and contribute to open-source projects such as coreboot, Zephyr OS, ChromeOS, and Android. You will emphasize on improving the scalability and maintainability of the codebase, fostering collaboration with external ODMs, OEMs, chip/SOC vendors, and internal global teams.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $141,000-$202,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range for your preferred location during the hiring process.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in board bring-ups, working with partners to deliver new devices, including low-level device driver and Board Support Package (BSP) development.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex kernel issues, providing clear technical direction to collaborating engineering teams.
  • Design and implement comprehensive monitoring dashboards to track bring-up progress and system health.
  • Collaborate with a global team of software and hardware engineers on new technology proposals and process improvements. Author detailed design documentation and implement core platform features.
  • Develop automation tools to streamline workflows and improve team productivity. Maintain high quality by increasing unit and integration test coverage.
