Minimum qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a human research-oriented field (e.g., Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Social Science) or equivalent practical experience.
  • 5 years of experience with Unix, text manipulation, and scripting or statistics languages, including experience with software development cycles.
  • 5 years of experience utilizing methods and techniques for performance management across projects, priorities, and locations.
  • 5 years of experience in theoretical and practical natural language processing (NLP) implications of linguistics subfields.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience and in-depth knowledge of domain concepts and terminology, including best practices, current issues or controversies, and common problems and pitfalls.
  • 5 years of experience operating in a high-paced, changing work environment with the ability to prioritize multiple functions and tasks, manage time efficiently, and navigate ambiguity.

About the job

Our team's mission is to extract and organize information about mobile apps and games and make it universally accessible and useful. This information is used across the Play Store to help billions of users find great apps for their devices.

Linguists on Play provide expertise in knowledge structures, human computation, and algorithmic performance to further enable the Play Store to be a curated, personalized, and opinionated destination for users, and support an ecosystem where app and game developers are positioned to succeed.

In this role, you partner closely with engineers to develop taxonomic structures and build Machine Learning (ML) solutions for us to better scale. You will drive quality and coverage improvements through data annotation and automation, including improving rater tooling and infrastructure. You will work closely with operations and product specialists who oversee our human evaluation program, including advising on human computation best practices, quality control methodology and language expansions.

The Platforms and Devices team encompasses Google's various computing software platforms across environments (desktop, mobile, applications), as well as our first party devices and services that combine the best of Google AI, software, and hardware. Teams across this area research, design, and develop new technologies to make our user's interaction with computing faster and more seamless, building innovative experiences for our users around the world.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $156,000-$229,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities

  • Generate bespoke, high-quality training datasets for novel GenAI use-cases, with prompt tuning, and output evaluation. Appropriately collect high-quality labels from raters, developers, and users, and define quality control methodologies.
  • Define and implement standards for developer-submitted assets, and enable product expansions and new product features.
  • Process and manage large amounts of data, analyze the data and graph structures, and develop semantic representations and content.
  • Build user profile attributes and relevant app content features, scale editorial content with new rater workflows, and develop new types of recommendations and clusters. Mine user-generated content for new features.
