Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
- 15 years of experience in software development.
- 5 years of experience building and shipping ML features or products for consumers.
- Experience working with product design teams.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in both research and product development organizations.
- Entrepreneurial mindset and experience building technical prototypes.
- Understanding of the landscape of generative AI technologies, particularly in their application to consumer domains like media, entertainment, education, and art.
- Ability to translate complex technologies into practical applications.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
About the job
As a Principal Engineer, you will lead technical strategy and direction for Envisioning Studio, responsible for developing prototypes of ML-based, consumer-facing features used across Google products. You will be instrumental in guiding the team's technological choices, fostering innovation, and ensuring the technical feasibility and scalability of our diverse initiatives. Critical to this team's success is effectively collaborating with core partners in Google DeepMind, Google Labs, Google Research, and other key partner organizations.
In this role, you will manage a small team of engineering talent, including software engineers and creative technologists. You will empower the team to explore more technically ambitious projects that have an impact on Google.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $294,000-$414,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Responsibilities
- Define and articulate the overarching technical outlook and strategy for the studio. Identify key trends, develop prototypes, evaluate their potential impact, and chart a course for technical exploration.
- Deliver prototypes and technical demonstrations using internal technologies as well as third-party technologies.
- Land new and future-forward concepts that are impactful at the company level.
- Stay update-to-date with the latest advancements in AI, creative technologies, and related fields to drive innovation.
- Collaborate with external partners like Google DeepMind, YouTube, Creative Labs, AIPEX, and academic institutions, ensuring seamless technical integration and alignment of technical strategies.
